Apple reportedly plans to add two cameras on the back cover of the iPhone 7, the new patent called "small form factor telephoto camera". The camera would use the same iSight camera, next to a small camera telephoto format, able to take better pictures by analyzing things like depth. In other words, such a breakthrough would provide a much better quality than the current sensor onboard sensor in the iPhone 6.
The patent describes in detail how the dual camera would be able to interchange the iris or the aperture stop, allowing the user to change the focal ratio from 2.4 to 10.0. This would offer a broad range of customization for each shot, which is currently not possible on the iSight camera of the iPhone 6.
There is no evidence to suggest that Apple plans iPhone 6S, although the S model is generally where the camera gets an upgrade. We expect this great change in the iPhone 7, which would allow Apple to stand out from the competition.
One or two sensors?
It's unclear how Apple could incorporate a dual camera. Does it will be a similar position to that of the HTC One M8 with a camera below the other, or as the concept of the picture (below) with two cameras side coast.
Considering that Apple favors a minimalist design, it is likely that the two sensors will be merged into a single external option. Hopefully, however, that the sensor does not exceed the back cover too (as is the case with the iPhone 6).
Apple has played with various new patents on technology dedicated to cameras, including a patent that would allow the company to lobby for photo quality of a DSLR on the iPhone. The question is when they will be applied.
