Microsoft recently announced its intention to its own Cortana PDA platform on Android and iOS devices. Now the company gives us a pretty clear agenda on this deployment ... at least for a platform. You will be able to try a beta version of Cortana on Android smartphones in the month of July.
The company that had originally promised a release of Cortana on Android in June, with an iOS version later in the year, already seems to lag behind the schedule it had set.
For those unaware, and which have not laid hands on Windows 10 or Windows Phone, Cortana is a service that lets you search the Web, set reminders, make appointments, take notes and do much than just talk to your device.
The service was initially launched on devices running Windows Phone, but Microsoft has evolved its service to bring it on Windows 10 PC, laptops, tablets, and up to the game console Xbox.
The Android application is designed as a companion for Windows devices. Your data can be synchronized between devices, so you can set a reminder on your smartphone and your Xbox when your PC will interrupt you while you watch a movie or surf the Web to warn you that it is time go and get pizza.
However, Cortana for Android will not have the same depth of integration with the mobile operating system from Google, as it can have on Windows Phone. Indeed, some features may not be available. For example, you will need to open the application to use Cortana. There is no option to set your smartphone to listen to a voice command "Hey Cortana" when the application is not in the foreground.
I also wonder whether it will be able to integrate with other Android applications, allowing to dictate messages, play music, or get help in navigation.
We should know in July. Meanwhile, you can tame the beast on Windows 10!
