Sawyer's new collaborative robot Rethink Robotics

Sawyer is the new collaborative robot brand Rethink Robotics, founded by Rodney Brooks. Smaller but more accurate, this robot arm mono designed as a machine tool for precise repetitive tasks, and in particular on a production line of electronic components.

Rodney Brooks read like everyone else, forecasts demand for industrial robots at some future time, which mainly come from the electronics market ... and therefore of Asia. So he thought of a more suited to this type of need .

More compact, Sawyer can be installed in places where Baxter could not go. For this, the company has completely overhauled Boston shape and composition of elastic actuators main element that made the success of its predecessor. The new uses cobot shaped springs "S" and made of titanium, instead of the springs "C" and steel.

With this new configuration, the arm of Sawyer always compliant, reaches a 1 meter long reach and can be part of the new positions. Also, the integration of Harmonic Drive gears in Sawyer joint drastically reduce the game and make it faster and more accurate robot

In vision, the novelty of the Sawyer is the use of a Cognex sensor located at the wrist, and positioned such that it is kept free, even when Sawyer is equipped with large clamps.

As Baxter, Sawyer uses the open-source ROS software standard for robot programming service. This program very intuitively, grabbing him by the wrist and showing him what you want him to do. The robot will then adapt to its environment despite minor changes without having to reprogram it.

Sawyer he will meet with the same success as the Baxter robot? Jim Lawton, the head of marketing at Rethink Robotics, told IEEE Spectrum have sold hundreds of Baxter this year. To compare with over 4000 models passed by the European Universal Robots, its main competitor (which has also just announced the release of a new robot arm the UR3). Sawyer will be available this summer at international level: North America, Europe, China and Japan. For distribution in France, it is always Generation Robots will do (read their official statement). It was announced at US $ 29,000.
