Google now allows users the ability to upload videos to YouTube 360 degrees. By installing the YouTube app on your smartphone or Android tablet, you'll be able to move your device to change the view as if you were standing on the stage or in the process of moving the head for another point of view.
You can also view videos at 360 degrees from your desktop browser and use the mouse to change your view. But the effect is cool when you use a mobile device.
360 degree videos still look pretty cool on a smartphone screen. But, they are likely to be better in a virtual reality helmet. In fact, all you have to do is move your head. Now that there is a growing number of helmets on the market, it makes sense for YouTube to accept such content.
And since some virtual reality helmets like Google and Samsung are essentially compatible with smartphones, all you need is the latest YouTube app running on Android 4.4 or later to start. Google says support for iOS is in the pipes.
YouTube video shows off the potential of 360 degrees with a half-dozen videos.
If you want to create and upload your own videos, you'll need a camera that can record videos in RFC format. Google has a list of compatible cameras - Giroptic 360cam, IC Real Tech Allie, Kodak and Ricoh SP360 Theta.
You can also use a platform or a third party video editing software, such as Kolor Autopano, assembling video and create an effect to 360 degrees.
Although currently the process can be complex for real enthusiasts, since your video file must include some metadata to enable reading 360 degrees, Google says it is working on a script to automate everything. At present, it will follow the procedure described on this page.
Virtual reality seems to have good days ahead ...
