Apple's new Photos application bridges the gap between Mac and iOS devices with pictures of synchronization in iCloud. This is a great little feature, but it is safe to say that some people may want not.
The photo sharing convenience iCloud is not immediately apparent unless you use multiple Apple devices like iPhone, iPad or Mac. The idea behind the photo sharing is when you take a picture with your iPhone, or import it to your Mac, it is synchronized and you can see it everywhere you have any of these Apple devices connected to iCloud account.
It works surprisingly well and it's nice because it eliminates the need to import or send your photos to other devices. Just give them some time to load and they will be downloaded to your Mac, iPad, iPhone, and iPod automatically.
Disabling or Making Tweaks sharing iCloud
That said, you may not want to use iCloud Syncing Photos for a number of reasons. Perhaps you are concerned about security, or if you have only one Mac and little use for sharing. Regardless, you can turn it all if you want.
There are two ways to do so. The first way is to open iCloud preferences system.
Once you have opened the iCloud preferences, you will see a lot of choices, any combination of which can be disabled so that they will not sync to iCloud, or completely disabled by unchecking all (if the signature would be just as effective ).
We could just click the next to Photos, which disables it completely. But we decided to take a more nuanced route by clicking on the "Options" button.
A simple check means that if you do not want to sync your mail or calendar, no problem.
There are three other iCloud Photos options. Let's review each so that we understand what they do.
My Photo Gallery - My Photo Gallery extends beyond the photos or even Apple computers. You can access My Photo Gallery not only Mac but Windows machines, iPods, iPads, iPhones, Apple TV, and so on. When you disable photos on your Mac will not be shared with any of these devices that plunge into the stream.
All photos that we add to our application Photos are automatically uploaded and shared with other devices that are connected to my Photo Stream, unless you enable the option.
It is important to emphasize that the iCloud Photos options affect the ability of your entire system to upload and share videos and photos, save them effectively locally. If you do not back up with Time Machine, or as another method, you could lose everything.
At the very least, it might be a good idea to consider leaving the "iCloud Photo Library" on until you are sure you have a backup solution firmly in place.
Application Photos Preferences
Finally, if you use the Photos application, there are more options in iCloud preferences you may know. Open the application, access its "Preferences" ("Command,"), click the "iCloud" tab and you will see the difference right away.
There is the "My Photo Stream" and "Photo Sharing iCloud" items that you expect, but under "iCloud Photo Library," there are other options.
It is unlikely that we will soon run out of storage, but it's nice to know there is an option to alleviate the problem if we do.
Below, you have two choices regarding how photos and videos are stored on your Mac - you can upload your originals so you have access to all your full-resolution versions, or you can choose to keep your full-resolution versions in the cloud, and only on your Mac if you have enough storage.
If you prefer to use another application such as iPhoto pictures (which is no longer being developed or updated) or Picasa, then you'll want to configure iCloud photo sharing with the preferences of the system compared from photos. Remember to set your alternate backup method if you choose not to use iCloud.
